The Great Shirou Day of 2021

The Great Shirou Day of 2021

It seems like there’s a holiday for everything these days, doesn’t it? Wow, that was the most old man thing I’ve ever said. It’s true, though. We have days for food, sports, whatever you can imagine. We even have days for fictional characters!

So, back around two years ago on the 19th of October 2019, ExtremeSManpig created the above video. This spurred a bunch of people, primarily on Twitter, to run wild with profile pictures featuring the Shirou Emiya from Fate/Stay Night. Throw this in with plenty of memes, and Shirou Day was born.

As some of you might know, I’ve been recently getting into the Fate series. Something I’ve wanted to do for years now. Back a few months ago, I had heard something about a Shirou day and the mention of October 20th. Little did I know that that fated day would become one of my favorite experiences I’ve had on the internet.

I too partook in the festivity with my fellow sword brothers. I donned my Shirou, grabbed my swords, bones, and memes, and did constant liking and retweeting with of Shirou content. Of course, I never went too far with it. At least I don’t think. After the festivities were over, I went back to normal.

It was almost like a dream. Did my Twitter ever look like Shirou? Was I ever called a Bladelord? Did I make it all up? It’s certainly possible. But if that’s the case, it was one I shared with my fellow Shirous in arms, and it was wonderful. Here’s my shitpost contribution!

And do me a favor. Just click the tweet. Twitter has awful thumbnails.

By far the most engagement I’ve ever gotten on a tweet and probably will get for quite a long time, and it was nothing but Shirous who did it. It was wild as hell. I don’t know how to describe it. It wasn’t even a good tweet. But I’m not only posting this to talk about weird crap. There was a moral to this story.

For all the memes, and wow, there were some good ones, this one actually one of the most wholesome things I’ve ever seen on the internet. How? Well, I’ll tell you.

You see, this day had a lot. Memes about bones. Memes about swords. Memes about trolleys killing people. It had tons of Shirous following each other until they broke their Twitter accounts. As people like to say, this was “Unlimited Shirou Works.” It was a bunch of like-minded fans coming together to do something dumb as hell.

But at the end of the day, when the dust blew over and the Shirou settled down, do you know what people were happy about? That they managed to find friends. Yup. That’s it. I saw so many people talking about how happy they were to make new friends and find other Fate/Stay Night fans to talk with.

They even made a Discord server so they could all get together and play some Melty Blood. Is that not the cutest, most wholesome thing you’ve ever seen from a bunch of morons? It was precious really. I had a giant smile on my face most of the day. It also helps that I genuinely love Shirou as a character. He deserves the day.

Now people are trying to do other days for Type-Moon characters, but I doubt they will pick up as much traction. This was a weird day, but it goes to show that for all the division in this world, everyone can still get together and make a miracle happen. If that’s what you want to call it, at least. I just thought I’d put this out here so I never forget it happened.

Thank you very much for reading
